God is so Good

It’s Sunday morning and I should be studying. Instead I’m sitting here at my small desk thinking of all my friends and family back home patiently waiting for the next college update. Since I last wrote I’ve sat through 6 classes, been overwhelmed by my syllabi, finished settling into my room, trekked the beautiful Greenway, been to a department party, a student dedication, a dinner for any kids who did not attend an Adventist academy, my first Convocation, all before getting to the weekend. To put it simply, I’ve been busy. Just as things were getting extremely crazy… God gave me the Sabbath.

Friday, after several hours of study, MJ and I stashed our books in their weekend hiding spots, threw on some tennis shoes, and headed for the Greenway. Located by the campus duck pond, the Greenway is a paved walking trail approximately 2 miles (one-way) long that winds through a wood. With each bend of the trail more and more stress melted away as we approached the Sabbath hours. A refreshing shower immediately followed and then we were off to our first SAU vespers.

Sabbath was the best day of my week. Much needed sleep was gotten preparing me for a blessing-packed day. First off, Sabbath school and church at North River SDA Church in downtown Chattanooga. The Sabbath school was packed and the topic was very inspiring. Song service was great and the sermon was incredibly thought provoking. After a yummy potluck my car load of ladies (and a gentleman) headed for the school.

At 3:00 a few of us re-loaded and jumped in line behind the school van on our way to the nursing home. Talk about blessings! The people there were so appreciative. We split into 2’s and 3’s and went room to room singing, talking, and praying with the residents. As I gazed upon these dear people, children of God, stuck in a hospital bed or, at best, a wheelchair, my heart was touched. Once again I was struck with the realization that, until Jesus comes, each and every human being is subject to the life I was witnessing. Bringing a smile to their faces or a thank-you from their lips was as simple as singing a hymn, listening to them, or praying with them. I left that building with a new outlook on life and a determination to visit again soon.

Nearly as soon as my car pulled into the school parking lot it was re-loaded with new people and our caravan of over 40 people made it’s way to Red Clay State Park for a hike and vespers. Testimonies were shared, nature was experienced, and a worship thought shared. We mingled with new people and visited with friends. Driving back to the school once again, we were blessed with a breath-taking view of the setting Tennessee sun. God is so good.

And now for a few pictures. Enjoy!

College Days

The rain fell steadily as I hugged my family goodbye and ran for my little, red Mazda. After a sweet prayer and emotional embraces my eyes were moist with tears. MJ climbed into the passenger seat and gave me a knowing look. We buckled our seat belts and pulled away from the little house my family stayed at for the weekend, beginning a brand new chapter of our lives. Dad walked over and put his arm around Mom who stood by the door, arms folded across her chest, watching as our car faded from view.

Our new journey, this new chapter of our lives, began Monday morning. And everything that’s happened since then seems like a blur. The faculty at Southern Adventist University has crammed our brains full of “important” information; much of it being incredibly useful, some of it being extremely boring. We’ve been given survival packets, welcome talks, campus tours, department introductions, food, counseled as to how we can survive college, and much, much more. The rain has hardly slowed down since everything started; making everyone look and feel consistently soggy.

New friends have been made, old ones found. God has blessed me with an incredible roommate as well as the presence of my faithful and wonderful best friend. While things are overwhelming and very new I am super excited to be here and look forward to what God has in store for this chapter of my life. I love and miss all of you and am so grateful for your prayers.

For those of you who are interested in seeing where I now live, here are some photos:

And after

Welcome Mr. Garrett!

Several months ago, I shot Garrett’s big brother, Landon, as well as a few pictures of their pregnant mother, Nikki. While I was away, Mr. Garrett decided to make his appearance. We’d been planning to do these pictures before I left for school. It was so much fun to meet Garrett and spend time with him, his mom, and his brother. On the 18th he was one month old. Welcome, Garrett!

One of my favorites!

Look at that intense expression! He is such an alert baby.

This face cracked me up. So precious!

Probably my favorite picture from the shoot

I love the depth of this photo. What a beautiful baby!

Thanks again, Hopps family! You have two beautiful children! God bless you!

Happy Birthday, Mom!

Mothers are very special people. That is a fairly well known fact. However, I have to say that my mother is more special than most (no, I’m not biased). Not only does my mother run the household effectively, support my Dad in all that he does, run errands for Dave and I, and cook for us all, she goes the extra mile. My mother is not simply my mom; she is my best friend. This year I celebrated a milestone birthday, 18, but Mom is celebrating an even bigger milestone: 50 beautiful years of life. Most women wouldn’t want their age shared on a blog but that’s just one more cool thing about my Mom. She is proud of how much energy she has (and how young she looks) and how far God has led her throughout the years.

Mom, you are amazing. Thanks so much for all you do for Dad, Dave, and I. Daily. I couldn’t ask for a better mother. You’re my friend, cheerleader, assistant, mentor, spiritual example, comedian, chef, chaufer at times, and much, much more. Each year you grow more and more beautiful inside and out. I’m so sad to be leaving you but look forward to all your visits and all my trips home. Thank you for spending your birthday this year helping me move into the dorm. Not exactly a glamorous way to spend your birthday. Thanks for sacrificing everything for Dave and I. I love you, Mommy. Part of your present this year is found below. Fifty is a special birthday and this is a special time of your life for many reasons. I’ve put together a slideshow of pictures from throughout the years. You’ll notice that the pictures are mostly of you and me. Since you spent your birthday this year moving me off to college, I decided to create a slideshow of memories of ours to commemorate our friendship throughout the years as well as your 50th birthday. Side note: There are 50 pictures in this slideshow. Enjoy!

(The pictures are all from a point and shoot. With leaving for college I didn’t have time to fix the red eye)

I love you, Mommy! I hope your birthday is the best day of your year. May God bless you with many more fabulous years!

Jamie and Erin: Snapshots

Jamie and Erin have been friends of mine for as long as I can remember. In fact, Jamie was the one that introduced me to Lora. After the wedding they grabbed me and asked if I’d snap a few quick photos of them. It was very impromptu and short but we got some great sister shots and had fun.

Things can get crazy with sisters sometimes…

Erin didn’t get tired of making faces as quick as Jamie

I love you girls! Thanks for the fun time! Blessings!
